Members of CGMC Sing for HRC Activist Harry Knox
Members of Chicago Gay Men's Chorus opened the evening of Elmhurst College's fourth annual LGBT event, "A Spirit-Filled Movement for LGBT Equality." The event was led by Harry Knox, Religion and Faith Director at Human Rights Campaign. Knox delivered the title lecture then led a discussion in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge.
In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Knox to serve on his administration’s first Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. The director of the Human Rights Campaign Religion and Faith Program since July 2005, Knox leads a program that motivates people of faith to advocate for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender equality.
Under Knox’s guidance, the Religion and Faith Program has seen the creation of a national speakers bureau of faith leaders who affirm the gifted nature of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, as well as a weekly preaching resource that provides scriptural commentary to ministers and lay people interested in an ecumenical L.G.B.T. perspective on the Bible.
Denied ordination because he is homosexual, Knox has taken his ministry outside the Church, speaking out for those who have been marginalized and forsaken.
Performing for this event was especially important to two CGMC members, Perry Simmons and Chris Castillo, who are alumni of Elmhurst College.
